Are Gay Teens Protected in School

Cole Goforth, a gay teen in Evans, GA who attends Greenbrier High School was sent home on 4/5/2010 for wearing a T-shirt with the word "Gay" on it. The ACLU and Lambda Legal at the time stated that it was disruptive. Cole stated that he was too the victim of daily harassment's for being openly gay in school and was told that it was his fault for being harassed because he "came out". The school officials finally came to the decision to honor and respect anything related to pro-LGBT freedom of speech and will protect students from any type of harassment's pertaining to this subject.
Now I just have a few things to say about that. Having been a victim of harassment in school, I know how it feels to be crushed by the school system and by students. Being from Louisiana people don't speak about anything related to the LGBT community and when they do it becomes a problem thus forcing people into silence. I am so happy that I was able to get out of that place and come to Atlanta where you don't have to be silenced for who you are. I feel for Cole and his family and I hope that his days at school can now be a safe and enjoyable one for him. We have got to stop this bigotry and hatred towards people for who the are just because you may not understand the type of lifestyle they choose to live.
